What the Page Aims For
Once Removed is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. Every control has a written label, every control is reachable and usable from the keyboard alone, and the focus is always drawn as a blue outline. The answer, the tree and every figure are text, so a screen reader reads them in order: the relationship, the coefficient, the two degrees, the tree's description, and the shared DNA.
How It Is Measured
Before each release the live page is checked by automated tools: axe-core rules for labels, contrast, landmarks and focus, run at a phone width and a desktop width; a mobile check of tap-target size (44 by 44 CSS pixels or larger), text size and sideways scrolling at three device widths; and a check for console errors at 375, 768 and 1440 pixels. Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1 against the page, and the darkest text reaches 14 to 1. Automated checks catch a share of problems, not all of them, so a report from a person who uses the page is worth more than any of them.
The Tree
The pedigree drawing is described in words directly under it, and every person in it is also named in the figures above. Your line and theirs differ in colour and also in position (yours on the left, theirs on the right) and in their labels, so colour is never the only signal. A partner who is no blood relative is drawn dashed and labelled.
Motion
The only motion is a fade of under a fifth of a second when the answer changes. If your device asks for reduced motion, the page shows each answer at once with no fade.
Known Limits
The examples and relationship names are in English only. The phrase reader understands the words listed on the page and names any word it cannot read.
Tell Us
If any part of the page is hard to use with your setup, write to support@painted.app with what you were trying to do and what got in the way. A person reads every message.
